What Guides Our Work

Always B Smiling is an organization located in the South Hills of Pittsburgh that provides inclusive support, resources, programs, and gathering spaces for families of children and young adults with disabilities. From community outreach to seasonal events, from activities at ‘B Town’ to trail rides on adaptive bikes, we provide opportunities in safe environments that are welcoming and comfortable.

Created by Dean and Kristin Huibregtse, Always B Smiling has become a living legacy of their late son Bennett, whose ever-present smile is now evident in all those touched by the organization.

  • Two women sitting cross-legged on a yoga mat, raising their hands in the air and smiling, in a room with a red and gray wall.

    Our Mission

Always B Smiling provides inclusive programs and experiences that promote well being, community engagement and empowerment for individuals with disabilities and health challenges along with their families.

  • A young man with glasses and short brown hair sitting in a wheelchair at a table, holding a green apple. A woman in a red shirt is standing nearby, holding a tray with food. The setting appears to be a casual indoor environment, possibly a dining or activity area.

    Our Vision

To create a community where every individual, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive, contribute and be valued.

Our Values

These values guide Always B Smiling’s mission to support individuals with disabilities and their families, fostering a welcoming and supportive environment.

  • Three young girls sitting on a park bench outdoors, with lush green trees in the background, one wearing glasses, one holding a phone, and another with a facial expression.

    Inclusion

Committed to creating an inclusive space where individuals with all abilities are welcomed, valued and respected ensuring that everyone has opportunities for growth.

  • A young boy holding a colorful craft made of popsicle sticks, paper, and a wooden chicken foot at an outdoor craft activity. The table in front has crayons, paper strips, and a water bottle. Playground equipment and other children are in the background.

    Empowerment

Always B Smiling aims to provide the tools, resources and support for individuals to build confidence, independence and a sense of purpose.

  • A group of four smiling people, three women and one young girl in a wheelchair, at an outdoor event. The young girl eats popcorn while the others hold popcorn and smile.

    Community

We create moments where individuals with disabilities, their families, volunteers, and community can come together, share experience and support one another.

What Makes Us Different

  • Two women sitting at a table, one in a wheelchair, smiling at the camera. They are holding a bouquet of flowers and have craft supplies on the table, including a bottle of glue and paper. The woman on the right has blonde hair and wears a red shirt, while the woman on the left has light brown hair and wears a white sweater. There is outdoor scenery visible through the open door behind them.

    Not a Drop-Off

For the safety and well-being of all participants, Always B Smiling is not a drop-off program. Caregivers are required to remain on site during programming. This approach helps us provide individualized support while maintaining a safe, and inclusive environment.

  • An elderly man with a beard and a young boy holding a decorated flower pot with the name 'Liam' on it, during an outdoor event on a sunny day. The man is smiling and the boy looks surprised. The scene is set at a table with a rainbow-colored fidget toy near them.

    Volunteer Buddies

Every participant is paired with a volunteer buddy who is there to offer focused attention, encouragement, and genuine connection during programs and activities. This one-to-one support helps participants engage at their own pace and feel seen, supported, and valued.

  • Group of individuals, including children and adults, smiling and holding rolling pins, gathered in a kitchen to participate in a baking or cooking event, some wearing shirts with the phrase 'Always Baking'.

    Whole-Family Support

Always B Smiling supports not just the individual, but the entire family—parents, siblings, and caregivers included. Families can participate together, connect with others who understand their journey, or take time to recharge while remaining close and involved.
